One of the most unique days on the Great Race in many years will happen on Tuesday, June 21, as the participants head from Elko, Nevada across the Salt Flats of Utah to Evanston, Wyoming.
After the morning competition, instead of the typical lunch stop the racers will get to take time off to visit the Bonneville Salt Flats outside of Wendover, Utah. They will be able to get a quick fast food lunch before or after driving out to the Fastest Place on Earth. Those that want to will be able to take their cars onto the world-famous race course. That evening in Evanston, the local Boys and Girls Club will be having a charity car wash at the venue for any racers or support teams that would like the salt cleaned from their vehicles.
For those who are not interested in the Bonneville Salt Flats, there will be plenty of time for a sit-down lunch at any of the many casinos in West Wendover, Nevada. There will even be some time to play the slot machines for those who are interested. After lunch and the side trip to Bonneville, the racers will still have to cross the Salt Flats. After some competition in eastern Utah, the racers will pass by the Great Salt Lake and Salt Lake City before more competition in the late afternoon on the way into Wyoming. The finish this day will be at the Evanston Machine Shop at the old Union Pacific Roundhouse.
I plan meeting my High School Buddy, Bob Marak who is driving his ’61 VW Ragtop in his second Race. Lunch will be great, can’t wait to see all the cars.
See you there Kerry!
