We are officially in Ogunquit, Maine, and we’re ready to hit the ground running. We had a tight schedule for our registration and tech inspection, but our crew (including volunteer help from the Maine Automobile Club) knocked it out of the park. More than 100 cars are registered for the 2014 Hemmings Motor News Great Race presented by Hagerty and we got to see ’em all today! Lots of beautiful cars, including Chad Caldwell’s new ’31 Auburn boattail roadster, which is stunning. The General Lee is here, Doc Hudson is here (piloted by Humpy Wheeler and his grandson Austin) and there is even a Chevy Corvair “hippy van” entered in this year’s race. It’s gonna be great, so stay tuned and watch for daily updates with photo highlights of each day’s routes and hosted stops! And remember to keep an eye on our Facebook page for up-to-the-minute updates as well.
Also, right next door to the Ogunquit Welcome Center (our tech area) is the Ogunquit Playhouse, where “Grease” is playing. We heard a tip that George H.W. Bush was planning to attend the matinee so we ran over and grabbed a photo as he was wheeled into the facility. The Bush’s have a beautiful house just a few miles from our starting point here in Ogunquit. It was a great day, and we’re looking forward to the Hagerty Trophy Run tomorrow and of course, the start on Saturday morning on Beach Street!
This is so neat! I plan on being at The Villages and watch the arrival. Have a safe trip everyone.
