Day 5 of the 2015 Hemmings Motor News Great Race presented by Hagerty gave us another long day of rallying in New Mexico. We covered many types of terrain throughout the day, and the instructions gave the racers plenty of opportunity for mistakes. Quick turns, lots of speed changes and a few long stretches of steady speeds made this one of the most challenging rally days of the entire event. Our hosted lunch stop was held at the Unser Racing Museum in Albuquerque, New Mexico, where the man himself, Al Unser Sr. greeted many of the racers and spectators as they came in. The museum gave you a real sense of the Unser family’s racing heritage–we’d suggest anyone in the Albuquerque area to stop in and check it out. From lunch, we spent a few miles on the interstate before we peeled off and went back to stunning views on a two-lane highway that connected us from I-25 to I-40. Gallup, New Mexico gave us a warm welcome for our hosted evening stop, and we couldn’t help but stare at all of the cool hotel signs throughout the strip of Route 66 that runs through town. Check out our highlights from the day and be sure to keep an eye on the daily scores, as the challenging course may have shaken up the cumulative standings.
Happy to see a photo of our dear friend Liz Sutter at one of the checkpoints. Mick & Jean from CT
