Note: This is the seventh of a nine-part series of Great Race Director Jeff Stumbs thoughts on each day on the 2015 Great Race route after returning from setting up the stops for next years event. The end of the first week of the 2015 Great Race will find the racers still in the state of Arizona, and they will be in for a memorable treat.
First, they will start the day in Flagstaff at more than 9,000 feet above sea level among the tall western pines. Before the day is out, they will travel down to just 450 feet above sea level in Lake Havasu.
But first they will visit historic Kingman, Ariz., home to the famous actor and friend of John Wayne, Andy Devine. Kingman is also home to the Powerhouse Route 66 Museum, which will be the host spot for lunch. See the video below for some information on the stop in Kingman.
After Kingman, racers will get to stop in historic Oatman, Ariz., where burros roam the streets freely. A gunfight or two may break out in historic downtown, where the only paved street is the original Route 66.
The day will end in Lake Havasu, where locals have a plan to keep racers cool by providing an air conditioned tent for dinner downtown.
The next report will cover Lake Havasu City, Arizona, to San Bernardino, California.
