Note: This is the fourth of a nine-part series of Great Race Director Jeff Stumbs thoughts on each day on the 2015 Great Race route after returning from setting up the stops for next years event. The fourth day of the Great Race will start in Amarillo, Texas, with a drive by of the world-famous Cadillac Ranch, and as the day goes on the participants will see more and more of what Route 66 is famous for.
The lunch stop in Tucumcari, N.M., will be filled with iconic structures, including the Blue Swallow Motel and the Buckaroo Motel, just to name a few. From Tucumcari, the Great Racers will take the original Route 66 dating to 1926 through Las Vegas and on in to Santa Fe.
Once in Santa Fe, the racers will be treated to warm hospitality on the downtown square.
There will be a time zone change this day on the Great Race the first in eight years. All Great Races since 2007 have been conducted in the same time zone. Racers will cross from the Central Time Zone, which is the same time zone since the start in Kirkwood four days earlier, to the Mountain Time Zone when they cross from Texas into New Mexico.
The next report will cover Santa Fe to Gallup, N.M.
