This morning, we packed up and headed for the border as our first task of the day. All racers, staff and support crews made it through customs with absolutely no issues, and we were on our way to the starting point for the day. By factoring in a few minutes of buffer time in case customs took a while. So, as the racers made their way into Canada, they had an extra long speedometer calibration period and a bit of free time before officially going on the clock. From there, it was quite a bumpy ride, as the day’s route sent racers onto a secluded road that snaked through miles of twists and turns, as well as a few one-lane bridges.
After several hours of intense speed changes and maneuvers, the racers arrived in Elliot Lake, Ontario, where big plans had been made to welcome the racers. We planned to have a big celebration at our lunch stop in downtown Elliot Lake, but we were deeply saddened by the tragedy that struck yesterday, at Elliot Lake Mall, near our planned stop. The 200,000 square foot mall suffered a roof collapse, which destroyed most of the building, and left more than one person trapped, with one feared to be dead. While this accident could have been way worse, it certainly put a damper on our celebration. With that in mind, we decided to move our event to another location, as our original spot was far too close to the accident site. We also decided not to set up our PA equipment or our apparel sales tent. All in all it was a somber stop at Elliot Lake, but we enjoyed our time there despite the unfortunate accident.
From there, we continued our trek around the Great Lakes and entered the town of Sudbury, Ontario after a challenging route that ended on Highway 17. Upon arrival at the A&W Restaurant in Sudbury, we were greeted by a big crowd who braved a rain shower to see more than 90 vintage vehicles pass through the finish line. After all of the racers poured in, it was time for a burger and fries from A&W and lots of good times, as the sun came out! Then, to finish it off, a Blues Brothers cover band gave the Sudbury crowd an awesome show, while some of the racers made their way to the hotel to prepare for tomorrow’s route! Check out our pictures from today, and please remember to keep the folks in Elliot Lake, Ontario in your thoughts and prayers after the horrible accident.
