The 2020 Great Race has been postponed until June 2021 due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and the recent spikes in cases in key states. The dates will be June 19-27, 2021, and the route will again be San Antonio, Texas, to Greenville, S.C., with all the same great city stops we had scheduled for this year. You can read the details in the attached press release which will go out nationally this afternoon.
I wish I could have told each of you the news personally, but with 120 teams, 475 total participants, 33 hotels and 19 cities it was impossible.
Just 10 days ago we looked to be home free with huge decreases in cases, hospitalizations and deaths, but while hospitalizations and deaths continue to trend in a positive direction, cases are on the rise in several states we would be visiting in seven weeks. And no one could guarantee everything we need to put on the event you expect and deserve.
John Classen, Angelia Summers and I have worked very hard to try to pull this off this year – scheduling everything including 3,000 hotel room nights twice and lot of food and festivities twice – but I guess it just wasn’t meant to be. Maybe the third time will be the charm. We will honor all entries into the 2021 Great Race, no matter if they were still scheduled for this year, already rolled over to next year or were replacement entries from just a month ago.
The travel agent will be cancelling every hotel room for each team, so you do not have to worry about that at all, and you will not be charged by any hotel or the agency. And Dale Wilson at Reliable Carriers is aware of what is happening and if you have a car scheduled for transportation he will be happy to reschedule you for 2021.
I will tell you this in closing, the 2021 Great Race will be the “Most Anticipated Great Race Ever,” and when we do get to San Antonio in mid-June of 2021 we are going to have the best time ever – from visiting the Alamo to the western concert to the festivities at the hotel. Thanks for all your teams hard work. It’s most prudent decision in light of the surge in positive diagnoses. We hope to see everyone soon and look forward to next year!!
Stay safe everyone!!
As usual, you always do the right thing. Thanks for your hard work.
I was hoping to be a first-timer this year, but will try to participate in 2021. My ’64 Comet Caliente is wanting to make a road trip.
I fully expect to see at LEAST 120 entries for the Coker challenge this year.
No Coker Tire Challenge this year.
Will the Coker Challenge happens this year?
No, it will not.
Looking forward to seeing The Great Race in San Marcos, Texas in 2021. I will always remember Dick Burdick and his teams. From Marilynn the librarian.
Have the online Rookie Seminars (scheduled for 7/15th & 22nd) been postponed as well?
Please delete or change the webpage that has all the dates listed on it for August. I looked at that first and was making travel plans. Luckily I stumbled across this.
I know this was a difficult decision.
We are in our 80s but we still “chase the race” whenever it’s in our range from Omaha to Boston to Atlanta and anywhere near our routes. Sorry it’s delayed, but we’ll visit next year!
Can’t wait to see this.
Cant Wait till 2021
just got to figure out how to cross the ocean
Are there any positions left for the 2021 Great Race?
If so, would you send me an application?
Thanks,
Lee Harman
Interested in being in the race. How do I begin?
Hello,
What’s required to enter the Great Race ?
I work for Auto Value in Chesaning, Mi. and drive a 1977 V8 Vega with only 31K on the clock.
While I don’t participate, I enjoy so much watching those that do cruise by. How can I get the actual routes taken (highway #’s, etc.) for the Great Race? Thanks!
Is the 1916 white Hudson speedster enrolled in the 2021 Great Race? Looking forward to seeing him. Marilynn the librarian
I’d like to know if a night-before gathering is planned for San Antonio.
