For more than three decades the Sugar Valley Rally has signaled the Great Race is only a few weeks away. The annual rally in Scottsbluff, Nebraska draws dozens of Great Racers trying to get some last minute practice in before the Big Race. And this year was no exception has Great Racers took home the top two spots. Gene and Becky White from Kansas finished first in the Unlimited Pro Division in their 1965 Corvette Coupe. The Whites will not be participating in this years Great Race, but they will be running as support crew for Jim Caudles team.
Second place in Scottsbluff went to Rick McKone of Peoria, Illinoia and Charlie Brittingham of Jasper, Indiana in Richs 1936 Ford two door sedan. Also at the rally was Kim Demott, who was the navigator in 1988 for the infamous Doc Fuson and his 1912 American LaFrance Fire Engine. Kims team was first in the Sugar Valley Rally in the Limited Division using one of the old Jones speedometers.
Great work guys!
They have put in the effort, so now the results are showing it! Gene should have retired sooner!
It was very interesting getting back into GreatRace style navigation…..a couple of editorial corrections……I navigated Big Thunder from 1990-1993….and Rich Mathiason and I won Unlimited Class…..still using the funky mechanical Jones…..
Thanks Rich McKone for remembering….hoping to catch up in Moline.
Way to go, Dr. McKone and crew!
