All of the hype that lead up to this morning’s start was realized. A great venue, a great crowd…surrounded by literally thousands of street rods and collectibles, The Hemmings Motor News Great Race presented by Hagerty got off to a rousing start. Minnesota is the headwaters state, and its Great River Road took me through many unique landscapes. From the humble source of the Mississippi River, through rolling farm lands and then back to the river, it was a beautiful drive. After all the excitement, the peaceful drive offered a wonderful solitude and a chance to rest the voice! The weather cooperated quite nicely through the day all the way to La Crosse, Wisconsin. With the beautiful Mississippi River backdrop, the competitors were welcomed by a small, enthusiastic crowd, who not only welcomed us but also provided a delicious dinner right at the venue…right up until the rain! Have I mentioned rain before? Tonight’s rain at the end of the arrival of the last few cars was another incredible downpour. I don’t think that I have ever seen a venue come down so quickly! Congratulations to all competitors for successfully completing Day 1. I’m keenly awaiting the posting of the Day 1 scores. Tomorrow, we head into Iowa. Let’s see if the rain continues to chase us!
How many cars left St. Paul Saturday? What were they all? I understand one was a Duesenberg….
