The best thing about the 2014 Great Race route from Maine to Florida this summer is the dramatic change in scenery — the most diverse on the event since 2007. After the rocky shores of Maine, the Green Mountains of Vermont, the Hudson River of New York and the Pocono Mountains of Pennsylvania, the race hits the Eastern Shore of Maryland.

On the way to Norfolk, Virginia, for the fourth overnight stop on the race, we visited Bob Bryan in Millsboro, Delaware, to check on the status of the stop there. Bob is a longtime Great Racer and the mayor of Millsboro. Anyone who has participated in the Pumpkin Run knows what great rally territory it is in that area.

After cross the 18 mile Bridge-Tunnel across the Chesapeake, racers will enjoy the view of the navy shipyards from their hotel room at the Norfolk Sheraton.

The following day we headed into another state — North Carolina — our 10th in five days. The first stop was in Elizabeth City where the race stops at Waterfront Park for lunch. The view of Albemarle Sound is breathtaking.

The overnight stop in New Bern will remind everyone of Cape Girardeau and Traverse City the last two year. The small Southern downtown with its historic buildings and churches and its beautiful trees are incredible is very excited to welcome the Great Race. Some of you may know that Pepsi was invented in New Bern on the same street where the venue is going to be.

Next, it is on to Clinton and Wilmington and the first day the rally will take place all in the same state.

  • I would be very interested in knowing exactly where you will line up at the finish at Lake Sumter Landing in the Villages. My parents live there and I really want them to see this.
