The final day is always a mix of emotions! While others will write about the Great Race from a driver/navigator perspective, MotorMouth sees the world a little differently. I see the work done behind the scenes to make it all happen. Particularly on the last day, one realizes how much heart and soul goes into making everything occur just perfectly. From hotel arrangements to venue organization, to music, to scripting what is to be said, to sponsor recognition, planning for colour guards and anthemists, all of which has to be done for every town or city. The crescendo builds for the finish line. Just getting the scores and finishing order to the announcers literally minutes before the cars arrive is a masterful thing. From the opening of the final show to the placing of medallions around the necks of each and every competitor, it happens like magic. To finish is to win!
The awards celebration/banquet is always special and tonight was no exception. From cheques, plaques and trophies being presented, the video presentation of this year’s event, to the announcement of the Tom McRae Spirit of the Event Award, it all takes planning. I am absolutely thrilled that Sister McRae was honoured tonight. She has had the spirit of the event in her whole being since this great event started some thirty years ago. Her brother, Tom must being smiling down on her tonight. How proud he would be knowing that she has joined the ranks of the most honoured among Great Racers…It commends die-hard enthusiasts for their dedication and contribution to the hobby, so it has been an highly acclaimed award from day one. Sister, for all you’ve done…this one’s for you!
So, now all is done, except for the travelling home. Tomorrow evening as I land in Ottawa, the fireworks over Parliament Hill will be lighting the sky in celebration of Canada Day!
